Strawberry Cream Scones | Rushin’ to Bacchanal

Ok, so for one, these strawberry cream scones are amazing. They’re little bites of delight that make you grin and reach for another, oh my goodness. I pinned them ages ago from Joy the Baker, and when I was looking for a more interesting breakfast goodie than banana bread, I knew it was finally time to test them out.

As for the ‘other’ – I produced an episode of a podcast! It’s called “Rushin to Bacchanal: When Caribbean Festivals Collide”, and I worked on it for the first half of this year. Last December I pitched the story for a show called Afropop Closeups, and they liked it (!) so I started working on it in January; we wrapped production in June.

Part of developing the story involved interviewing Bahamians in the culture industry. Not all of them have offices, and our meetings had to be in reliably quiet places where we could also have a conversation. This eliminated Starbucks and the library, and after a hopeful start I was turned down from another place that came to mind. Then I thought of my friend Travis, who works for himself in an office that used to be a coworking space in a central location in town. It would be perfect! When I told him what I was looking for he agreed without hesitation, and my problem was solved.

After declining to meet one of my interviewees at her favourite café, I promised her a breakfast treat if she’d come to Travis’ place instead. Not only was she happy to oblige, but turns out she loved the scones – you can listen to her say so!

I prepped the dough the day before, baking half the batch for a fun shoot with my photographer sister-from-another-mister Elora Williams. The other half I baked fresh the morning of the interview. As a thank you to Travis and his colleagues I also baked chocolate chip cookies, and everyone who came by the agency that day wound up in sugar heaven.

Elora and I had a blast styling and shooting these scones, and I’m so happy I can finally share them with you! They would be ideal for any breakfast, fast or slow, and you most definitely need to make them. Also, don’t skip the cream! Strawberries and cream are a classic combo for a very delicious reason; the cream takes these yummies to the next level. Finally, I hope you check out the podcast. Let me know what you think!
